Adventures from reading books captured within short reviews.

A Thousand Acres - Jane Smiley I read this book sometime during the 90s long before my Goodreads.com days. The following review is from PageADay Book Lover's Calendar for April 7, 2013:

It has to be said that Jane Smiley’s inspiration for this novel came from Shakespeare’s King Lear, and yet in this Pulitzer Prize winner she makes the terrain of familial betrayal wholly her own. Smiley’s most sympathetically drawn characters are the two oldest sisters who compete for love in all the wrong places. The writing is wonderful, the suspense is intense, and the emotions are potent. An entirely satisfying reading experience and deserving of all praise.
